The Dangers That Forklifts Can Pose

Forklift Training In Warehouse

Forklifts are commonly used in warehouses. They’re great for transporting heavy items that are stored at height. However, they can be dangerous. An average of 27 people are killed every year by forklift trucks. Therefore, training is essential. Let’s take a look at a few of the reasons why training is put in place, and which common dangers need to be avoided.

Forklift Attachments

The attachment is the piece at the front of the vehicle. This is where the name ‘forklift’ comes from, as they are made of two large prongs that protrude outwards. Each attachment will have its own uses and limitations, so it’s important to familiarise yourself with this first. Different sized attachments will change where the forklift’s centre of gravity is. A user who has no awareness of this could tip the truck.

Careless Driving

Forklifts are able to drive surprisingly fast, and they’re often used in busy warehouses. This means there’s a risk to everyone in the vicinity of the truck. Drivers need to be trained to manoeuvre the forklift safely, with awareness of their surroundings. They need to be mindful of other machinery, objects around them and people nearby.

When the truck is loaded, the driver’s view from the front is obstructed. Therefore, they might need to drive in reverse to move the load from A to B. Forklifts have rear-wheel steering, so the front end of the vehicle will turn tightly and the rear end will swing out. This is something to be mindful of when driving around warehouses.

Load Hazards

The weight that you’re carrying with the forklift needs to be considered. Some loads will need additional equipment to secure. If the load is likely to shift as you drive, you must take measures to prevent this first. Sudden changes to the weight distribution could result in overturning or accidents.

The load capacity of each vehicle and attachment will be non-negotiable. This means that it’s not okay to lift something that’s only a few kg heavier than the maximum. If anything, the load should always be slightly under capacity for maximum safety.
